SCP-XXX as it currently appears. |
---|
Class: Safe
CONTAINMENT: No special containment is needed. SCP is currently stored in secure closet B-84 when not being tested.
Addendum XXX-A:* SCP-XXX is, in and of itself, not dangerous, so no change to containment is required. However, instances of SCP-XXX-1A are accessible only with Level 4 Clearance, or approval thereof. Any instances of SCP-XXX-1 created through experimentation with SCP-XXX must be incinerated immediately. Instances of SCP-XXX-1A are to be handled only with reinforced gauntlets, to prevent accidental creation of SCP-XXX-1B. Currently only the instance of SCP-XXX-1A used in the creation of the original instance of SCP-XXX-1B is in secure storage, O5 approval is required for the creation of further examples.
DESCRIPTION: A free-standing mirror 1.5 metres tall, and 0.7 metres wide. The frame was originally a heavy, carved wooden design but changed in late 19██ to a black, brushed steel design regarded as more in keeping with modern conventions of aesthetics. The mirror is in all respects (other than the spontaneous modification of its frame) completely normal, and no unusual materials or emissions have been detected - subsequently, the cause of its more unusual properties is undetermined.
Breaking the mirror will succeed, however the mirror will reassemble itself some thirty minutes after destruction; this occurs instantaneously, but does not cause the debris produced by the breakage to disappear. Attempts to record this phenomena, both by eye and with video equipment have failed - the mirror reassembles too quickly for human perception to register any mid-stage, and recording devices invariably fail when the reconstitution occurs. The point of origin of replacement glass and/or frame is, therefore, unclear at this time.
**Addendum XXX-B:""" Broken shards of mirror glass from SCP-XXX take on unusual properties of their own; please refer to SCP-XXX-1, below, for information.
Anyone looking into the mirror sees their reflection, but with their (percieved) flaws accentuated. In addition, observers able to see the reflection will also see these flaws. Examples in order to illustrate the effect are provided below.
Experiment XXX-1
Subject: Agent Westmore (Caucasian Male, 37, 190 lbs)
Observer: Dr. Kincaid
Reflection Appearance: Agent Westmore's nose, which is not particularly prominent, was depicted as being approximately 150% of normal size. Agent Westmore admitted that he dislikes his nose, feeling it to be too large. In addition, the Agent was shown somewhat more unfit and slightly heavier-set than in reality - attributed to anxieties over the effect of age on the part of Mr. Westmore.
Experiment XXX-2
Subject: D-35519 (African-American female, 27, 140 lbs)
Observer: Dr. Kincaid, Agent Li
Reflection Appearance: Subject D-XXX-1 has extensive scarring to her hands and face, as a result of an attack with boiling water in prison (subject was convicted of infanticide and served several years in a correctional facility before transfer to the D-program). The mirror depicted this scarring as being significantly worse, with the result that the subject began to scream hysterically, suffering severe psychological damage. Subject D-XXX-1 subsequently terminated."Significantly worse" doesn't really cut it - she looked like someone repeatedly put her face through a mincing machine. I'd rather not repeat this experiment. - Dr. Kincaid.
Experiment XXX-3-A
Subject: Agent Li (Asian female, ██, 1██ lbs)
Observer: Dr. Kincaid
Reflection Appearance: Agent Li had already informed Dr. Kincaid that she would be undergoing a breast enlargement at the end of ████, and suggested a 'before' and 'after' experiment. As expected, initial test showed Agent Li as having a markedly smaller bust size than in reality. Several other, more minor, discrepancies were noted, but not recorded as they were not relevant for this test.
Experiment XXX-3-B
Subject: Agent Li (Asian female, ██, 1██ lbs)
Observer: Dr. Kincaid, Agent Westmore
Reflection Appearance: Following the breast enlargement procedure, Agent Li's reflection depicted her bust size as unchanged, but increased the size of her buttocks somewhat. Other minor discrepancies were noted, and corresponded to those noticed during Experiment XXX-3-A.Well, I have got a big ████… - Agent Li
Experiment XXX-4
Subject: "Clarky" (Brown Cocker Spaniel, age 4)
Observer: Dr Kincaid, Agent Li
Reflection Appearance: No change. Canine disinterested in mirror, beyond sniffing the frame briefly.
Experiment XXX-5
Subject: SCP-343
Observer: Dr. Greenwich
Reflection Appearance: [DATA EXPUNGED]Let's not do that again. - Dr. Kincaid
The mirror's effects range from the subtle, to the very extreme, and are keyed to the individual standing in front of it; repeated exposures result in the same exaggerations, whilst any modification of exaggerated flaws (at least, those regarded as 'positive' by the subject) will lead to said exaggeration not taking place but a secondary flaw being enhanced to a comparable degree - as shown in Experiment Logs XXX-3-A and XXX-3-B.
SCP-XXX was recovered from the home of one I. [REDACTED], of [DATA EXPUNGED] who died from complications arising during her 97th plastic surgery procedure. By chance, Agent ██████ happened to walk past the mirror whilst it was being loaded for transport by I. [REDACTED]'s relatives; realising quickly that it's properties were somewhat unusual, she purchased it immediately from them and donated it to Site-██ for further study.
ADDENDUM XXX-B:
It would appear that SCP-XXX has a subtle ability to confer its effects to subjects after repeated viewings. This was first reported to Dr. Kincaid by Agent Li, who complained that exaggeration of flaws in SCP-XXX had 'migrated' to other reflective surfaces; this prompted Dr. Kincaid to remove Agent Li from the experiment. Migration persisted for a period of 26 days before Agent Li's reflection returned to normal - corroborative statements from various personel report that effects were universal, i.e. anyone viewing Agent Li's reflection during this time reported said exaggerations. Effect was consistent for 23 days, and then lessened in increments over the following 72 hours. Further testing pending approval.
Incident XXX-1 and SCP-XXX-1/SCP-XXX-2
After the destruction of SCP-XXX's glass during an experiment on █/██/20██, D-4009-32, assigned to clean up duty in the testing chamber, managed to secret a piece of the mirror glass upon their person before returning to D-class confinement.
D-4009-32 later used this shard of glass, hereby referred to as SCP-XXX-1, to stab to death D-9492-02 during an altercation several hours later. Approximately 30 minutes later, Foundation Employee R████ ██████ reported hearing banging sounds originating from Storage Closet B-84 and summoned two nearby Guards. Review of Security footage from the vicinity of Storage Closet B-84 shows Employee unlocking B-84 whilst Guards remain at ready position. Employee is attacked and killed, via massive laceration to the jugular vein, by facsimilie of D-9492-02 emerging from Storage Closet B-84 (hereafter referred to as SCP-XXX-2). Guards open fire on SCP-XXX-2, causing it to shatter in a manner typical of glass. Analysis of remains show that fragments of SCP-XXX-2 are consistent with fragments of SCP-XXX, having no (detectable) special or unusual properties.
Further testing pending approval. - Granted. - O5-█
Revision to Containment procedure pending approval. - Granted. SCP-XXX-1 to be kept in maximum security storage locker A-32, with access granted only by Level 4 Clearance or above. - O5-█
