Item #: SCP-1034
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-1034 is to be stored unstrung in a Safe item locker in Storage Site-23. After any experiments, the strings used are to be removed and stored in a separate locker. After testing for any remaining anomalous properties, they may be reused for testing or taken for personal use by any Level-1 or higher personnel. Any Level-2 or higher personnel may requisition SCP-1034 for testing with approval from Drs Y████ or N██████. No subjects with a history of schizophrenia or psychosis may use SCP-1034.
Description: SCP-1034 is a ████-brand silent practice violin, made by the ██████ company in 20██. The instrument is approximately 50 cm long from the base to the end of the neck. The body is made out of wood, probably cherry, and plastic. No anomalies have been detected in the composition of the body.
When SCP-1034 is strung and played, any persons in the immediate vicinity, including the player, see images form in the air. These images are not visible via surveillance cameras. Any persons further than approximately 50 meters do not see these images. The images produced vary depending on the skill and mindset of the player and the music played. Less proficient violinists will create lower-quality images, with complete novices making nothing more than stick figures. See Addendum 1034-A for more details. Images are typically of dancers, but when a piece from an opera or a movie score is played, a scene from that opera or movie may be acted out.
The images seem very real to those in the area of effect, and are completely indistinguishable from reality if the player is sufficiently skilled. No physical effects have ever occurred as a result of SCP-1034's anomalous effects, except this associated with extreme fright in certain cases.
SCP-1034 was recovered from the apartment of ███ ██████, a violin player with the █████ Chamber Orchestra, after a series of reports of "monsters" in his building. ███ ██████ was found playing the instrument in his bedroom, surrounded by several nude women, who disappeared when he stopped playing, startled by the Foundation agents. A handwritten sheet of music labeled "Casanova's Concerto" was open on a music stand; it is now stored as document SCP-1034-1. Several other sheets of music, apparently written by ███ ██████ specifically for use with the object, were found in the apartment; they are catalogued as Documents SCP-1034-2 through -12.
Addendum 1034-A: Notable test results
Name: Dr Y████
Date: ██/██/20██
Subject: D-152846
Additional Information: The subject had never touched a violin before. He was instructed to just try to play a tune.
Results: The subject was surrounded by flashes of various primary colors, and disorienting swirls of light.
Notes: That was extremely unpleasant. I would rather not try this with any untrained subjects - Dr Y████
Name: Dr Y████
Date: ██/██/20██
Subject: Dr N██████, a classically trained violinist.
Additional Information: Dr N██████ played the violin part from "In the Hall of the Mountain King", from the opera Peer Gynt.
Results: A circle of "trolls" formed around Dr N██████, and began to dance in a circle. They spun faster and faster as the piece went on, until Dr N██████ was surrounded by a grey blur. All images faded when Dr N██████ stopped playing.
Notes:
Name: Dr Y████
Date: █/██/20██
Subject: Dr N██████
Additional Information: Dr N██████ played a sonata in F Major composed by Georg Friedrich Handel.
Results: Instead of dancers, a small audience appeared, sitting as if in a concert hall. Some were visibly bored, and at the end of the piece applauded listlessly before fading out.
Notes: Does this thing have tastes in music? -Dr N██████
Name: Dr Y████
Date: ██/█/20██
Subject: Dr N██████
Additional Information: Dr N██████ had played several Baroque pieces before this, with results similar to the previous test; he again played a sonata by Handel.
Results: A small audience again appeared, but this time actively booed. Several of them appeared to throw tomatoes, rocks, and other missiles at Dr N██████.
Notes: No more Baroque music is to be played on SCP-1034; the object apparently has a distaste for it.
Name: Dr Y████
Date: █/█/20██
Subject: D-153834, formerly a fiddler in a folk music band.
Additional Information: Subject suffers from paranoid schizophrenia; is convinced that "the Darkman" is watching him constantly. Subject played a simple fiddle tune.
Results: Several people dressed in "old fashioned" clothes, with the women in large skirts and the men wearing overalls and checkered shirts, and began to square dance in front of the subject. In addition, a large, human-shaped shadow appeared directly behind the subject, and moved with him. At the end of the fiddle piece, subject turned around, screamed, and passed out.
Notes: Further experiments with the subject showed that no matter the piece played, this "Darkman" was always there. Experiments with subjects suffering from any sort of delusion are now forbidden.
Name: Dr Y████
Date: ██/█/20██
Subject: D-154865
Additional Information: Subject was reasonably proficient on a violin. Subject was given sheet music to B█████ S████'s song [REDACTED], arranged for Violin.
Results: [DATA EXPUNGED]. D-154865 was terminated immediately. Dr Y████ requested and was given a Class-A amnesiac.
Notes: Never again. -Dr Y████
