Item #: SCP-1742

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-1742 is to be kept in a soundproof room at all times. All personnel entering or leaving SCP-1742’s room should be wearing the provided noise-cancelling headphones with a thin layer of SCP-148 worked into them. If anyone does enter SCP-1742’s containment area, a team of staff must observe the subject at all times. If the subject removes their headphones at any time, they must be removed from SCP-1742’s room immediately.

Description: SCP-1742 resembles an old, heavily worn jukebox—the outer covering of the jukebox is broken in places; sharp shards of metal, plastic, and glass stick out at odd angles. The window which would normally display the song name, audio-playing device, etc. appears to be painted black on the inside, and the on/off switch is missing. SCP-1742 seems to be able to run without power, randomly switching itself on and off even when unplugged. Where it obtains its energy is unknown.
When SCP-1742 is on, it plays fragments of old songs, heavily broken by static to the point where the songs are virtually unrecognizable. When people are within audible range of SCP-1742, within five (5) minutes subjects become convinced that they can “fix” SCP-1742. Subjects will attempt to fix SCP-1742 for another five (5) minutes, until becoming frustrated, at which point they will begin to pound on SCP-1742’s covering, often breaking it further and creating more sharp edges. Subjects will continue to hit SCP-1742’s outer covering, cutting their arms and legs on its sharp, broken edges until they bleed to death or are removed.
When a subject first hits SCP-1742 outer covering, a short, comprehensible recording plays: An unknown voice asking “Why did you do that? You shouldn’t have done that…” Although this recording has been picked up on audio recordings and subjects often react to it, when questioned later about the voice clip subjects report no memory of it.
