Suspected SCP-1837 specimens slated for explosive ordinance disposal

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-1837 is currently uncontained. Its containment procedures are under review. One copy of every known variation of SCP-1837 is to be stored in a locked container in the Anomalous Appliances storeroom in Site-16¹. Any new specimens are to be slated for explosive ordinance disposal (EOD). All suspect or discarded lightbulbs found at Site-16 are to be treated as instances of SCP-1837.

By directive of the O5 Council, Site-16 is not to be abandoned, and SCP-1837 must be contained. Only D-Class personnel decontaminating Site-16 and their security escorts will be allowed into areas of Site-16 with extant fluorescent lighting.

All bulb- and fluorescent- based lighting at Site-16 is to be phased out in favor of LED or mirror-based lighting. As of ██/██/████, all lightbulbs have been added to the Site-16 Restricted Items List. No lightbulbs are to leave Site-16 at any time. Vehicles entering and exiting Site-16 topside must check their headlight and lamp bulbs at the perimeter of the facility.

Site-16 is not to be used as a containment facility for any visual cognitohazards, observational SCP's, or any Euclid or Keter class objects. All Site-16 staff are to be screened for any symptoms of photosensitive epilepsy. When in Site-16, all personnel must carry opaque goggles and equip them during any visual anomalies.

If SCP-1837 undergoes an Paroxystic Phase, all personnel are to immediately vacate the area slowly and silently and make no attempt to assist the affected subject. D-Class personnel are to be abandoned until SCP-1837 ceases activity. Priority personnel are to be separated from SCP-1837 by personnel wearing opaque goggles.

In the event instances of SCP-1837 are identified outside of Foundation custody, SCP-1837 will be reclassified as Keter and Protocol 1837-Quark is to be enacted. Power is to be cut to the affected area and MTF-Kappa-12 "Circuit Breakers," posing as Occupational Safety and Health Administration officials, are to strip and destroy all lighting. Class-C amnesiacs will be administered to all witnesses.

Description: SCP-1837 consists of 28 78 96 incandescent incandescent and fluorescent lightbulbs collected from various light fixtures within Site-16. Instances of SCP-1837 are visually identical to and functionally indistiguishable from normal lightbulbs until they undergo a Paroxystic Phase. This consists of:

1. SCP-1837 and nearby incandescant or fluorescent lights will appear to burn out.
2. After 30 seconds to 5 minutes, SCP-1837 will relight and flash between 2 and 10 times per second.
3. SCP-1837 will arrest the gaze of the first person to make eye contact with SCP-1837. The subject becomes completely unable to look away or move away from SCP-1837. Subjects will invariably scream (pausing only to inhale) during the duration of this effect.
4. SCP-1837 will continue to arrest the gaze of the subject until a person or persons has been lured to assist the subject. SCP-1837 and nearby specimens of of SCP-1837 will begin to flash rapidly, reaching a strobe effect of 20-60hz. Exposure to the strobe effect induces a state similar to moderate to severe photosensitive epilepsy, invariably triggering low intensity partial seizures which grow to become severe complex partial seizures over the course of 2.5 to 5 minutes. Personnel moving slowly and silently will not trigger this effect. If no personnel arrive within 15 minutes, SCP-1837 progresses to stage 6.
5. Electrical surges from SCP-1837 may cause malfunctions on the local power grid and affect the operation of nearby electronics.
6. SCP-1837 will, if left uninterrupted, eventually speed the pace of its strobe effect to over 150 hz. The strobe effect has been clocked at up to approximately ████ hz. Subjects' complex partial seizures will reach the tonic and clonic phase in 100% of cases. Subjects who undergo a tonic-clonic seizure induced by SCP-1837 will pass into a permanent coma. SCP-1837 will cease activity within 10 minutes of reaching ████ hz.
7. Personnel with pre-existing photosensitive epilepsy will progress to the above symptoms within 20 seconds of initial exposure.

Comatose subjects convulse constantly in a state consistent with severe clonic effects of a grand mal seizure. No personnel have been brought out of a convulsant coma induced by SCP-1837. At this stage, euthanasia may be administered to any affected Foundation personnel. Personnel affected by SCP-1837 are to be quarantined for study in the Site-16 Medical Wing. Median lifespan of subjects afflicted with SCP-1837 comas is 67 days.

SCP-1837 appear to act in unison and will coordinate Paroxystic Phases to terminate lighting in specific areas of Site-16. Charting known Paroxystic Phases across the Site-16 map has revealed a strong preference for activating near containment and transfer chambers of visual cognitohazards.

No method of identifying SCP-1837 prior to an Paroxystic Phase has been found. After Site-16 was stripped of incandescant lighting, SCP-1837 was considered contained. Following Incident 1837-A-06142011, fluorescent bulbs are now to be considered instances of SCP-1837. Other bulbs, such as flashlights, gun lights, spotlights, and even vacuum tubes may be affected. New lightbulbs of any kind entering Site-16 appear to randomly become instances of SCP-1837.

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-1171 requires no special containment measures but should be kept in a secure storage locker when not in use. Researchers wishing to test SCP-1171 should submit their proposals in writing and ensure all appropriate forms for the use of D-Class personnel have been filed.

Description: SCP-1171 is a generic-brand snorkel - testing has revealed that it performs its ostensible function to an acceptable standard. Tests indicate that SCP-1171 has no anomalous chemical or molecular properties - the object displays no further resistance to damage than expected for an item of its apparent makeup.

Between █ and ██ minutes after removing the object, however, the wearer begins to report the sensation of a foreign object in their throat, progressing to FBAO (foreign body airway obstruction) within ██ minutes. In all cases thus far the body in question has proved non-extractable by a third party. The subject is typically rendered unconscious within ██ minutes of removing the snorkel.

Following loss of consciousness the foreign body is expelled from the subject's throat - the item correlates closely to the subject's greatest fear. Tests with D-Class personnel indicate that if the item they most fear would ordinarily be too large or too small to obstruct their osophagus, the item generated by SCP-1171 will be appropriately resized to constitute a choking hazard. Although the primary effect of SCP-1171 is not typically lethal, objects produced by SCP-1171 have included chemical, biological and radiological hazards. Objects generated by SCP-1171 during testing are subject to further testing; objects which display no anomalous qualities should be incinerated unless authorised by sector management. Objects displaying anomalous traits should be catalogued separately and stored appropriately as SCP-1171-X.

SCP-1171 was brought to the Foundation's attention by Agent J████ ██████ , who purchased the item while on holiday. After wearing the item in their hotel room, Agent ██████ was found unconscious by his wife next to a ball of pink baby socks with trace saliva. Further testing at Site-19 confirmed the anomalous properties of the snorkel.

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-1052 is to be contained inside a 2000-galleon salt water tank, made with acrylic or laminated glass so researchers can accommodate and observe experiments (to be upgraded with higher grade transparent material of similar tensile strength when available). Non-salt water can be used to fill the tank and conditioned with salt-water mix should alternative be needed. The floor is to be made of reinforced concrete treated with waterproof coating. A cover is needed to prevent water from accidental spillage of any nature, and any activity to remove or require the removal of the cover is not to be undertaken without approval. No filtration or regulatory mechanism are currently needed the tank until pending investigation reveal otherwise.

Recovery Report

SCP-1052 is a vast colony (vast collection of visible microbes referred to as a single collective SCP-1052 for convenience) of microorganism with the appearance of a "mist" of ocean sediment or mass of algae, slightly brown and green in color, and easily mistaken as immobile and harmless. However, it floats about and never sink when inert and inside fluid, and occasionally move in supposed random directions.

When a living subject is introduced to its tank, it becomes active and slowly moves toward the organism, until it comes into contact with it and the subject begin to disintegrate. Most animals do not to react to its presence and ignores it, falling prey to SCP-1052.

On closer experimentation and inspection, further nature of SCP and its activities were revealed. The ten-five-two organism is actually a colony of vast numbers of multicellular microbes (indeed it would need to be vast to be visible), and it lives and reproduce in a short span of time as would be the norm of microbes. When it comes into contact with its food source, SCP-1052 begins to break down and consume the cellular makeup of the target, initiating stage one - a breach event, and its reproduction rate receives an increase, reproducing fast growing offspring as it intrudes toward the bloodstream. Once it enters target's bloodstream it begins to breakdown the cells from the inside as well, resulting in cell lose both from within as well as out, beginning stage two - subsuming of the entire living system. It travel inside the blood and all other fluids within its victim, using them as a mediums for movement, and propagate throughout the body, leading to the hastened rate of host subsumption. Most immune responses offer little to no resistance to SCP-1052 with the exception of few species.

This of course, means removal of the victim from the SCP's environment would not halt the event. Full elapse of all stages have hitherto been observed to complete in the matter of minutes to under an hour, depending on the mass of victim involved, and is not proportional.

On conclusion of a test it was found that the actual volume of water in the testing container increased by a minute amount, possibly waste or byproduct material from consummation of cells and other liquids inside the target (blood and other fluids are used up as well). The mass of the group obviously increased as well, since it reproduced all the while with accelerated rate. Bones were the only evidence of event left, intact and without damage. Popular theory is that it is too dense for the SCP, for corroborating evidence see Selachimorpha, Chimaeriformes and Batoidea below.

Since SCP-1052's medium of locomotion is any fluid, this means should its containment unit be broken it could propagate as fast as the liquid would move on any surface.

Various marine animal have developed different mechanisms to avoid being consumed by SCP-1052 microbes, however, this seems to be limited to marine animals whose residence are confined solely to aquatic environments. No semi-aquatic or entirely non-aquatic animal have so far been observed to be immune to SCP-1052's effects.

Marine mammals of the orders Cetacea, and Sirenia seem to have immune system responses to cope with the presence of SCP-1052 in their bodies. Lesions and open sores will still appear on these animals minutes after coming into contact with SCP-1052, but intrusion will stop soon after breach into bloodstream.

Selachimorpha (sharks), Chimaeriformes (ghost sharks), and Batoidea (rays) - fish that possess dermal denticles (scales composed of enamel-like material) are outright immune to penetration from the skin layer by SCP-1052, although not from the feeding orifice. SCP-1052 nonetheless seem not to pay any attention to these species of fishes, although accidental or intentional ingestion could still lead to normal "infection" event.

Octopuses and certain other animals in class Cephalopoda (certain species of squids and scuttle fish) seem to be outright immune to SCP-1052 for reasons unknown.

Some jelly fish in the phylum Cnidaria have proved to be somewhat resistant to the microoganism. Exposure to it resulted in various degree of system damage varying in the severe to medium, and this is true even for specimen of the same species (meaning different specimen of the same species have varying survivability).

All known tested animals of non-aquatic and semi-aquatic origins have perished.

Addendum: SCP-1052 effects apply to any organic or synthetic organic material as well. This means it will eat through pieces of clothing, and synthetic wet suit. (Discovery made after slipping occur.)

Addendum: All 1052s removed from tank and not re-introduced post-experimentation are to be dehydrated and incinerated.

Addendum: Microbe's life time is shown to be up to the span of a couple weeks.

Addendum: SCP-1052 can be broken down with near pure alcohol (such as rubbing alcohol, or high proof consumable alcohol), similar to many other forms of microbes.

Addendum: Proposed experiment with SCP-21052. Considering microbial organism's lack of capacity for fear response, as well as 21052's supposed immunity to 1052, meaningful result deemed unlikely. Proposal denied.

SCP-1138, currently in the shape of Friedrich Niezshe's letters

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: The object should be stored inside a safe in Dr. █████ office in Sector ██. For the purpose of research, employees with Level 2 clearance or higher may use the object if authorized by Dr. █████. Handling and reading SCP-1138 is not recommended for employees who have difficulties changing their philosophical convictions. Employees should not argue with the object and question the correctness of the information contained within, even if said criticism is perfectly justified and true.

Every month a researcher studying philosophical concepts (either by duty of service or for personal education) should compose an article containing at least █ references to the object. At least ██ other employees should familiarize themselves with this article; it should be archived afterwards.

Description: SCP-1138 is a book that can take the shape of different philosophers' and/or writers' correspondence. Even though the writing style always corresponds to a given author, vast majority of the letters turned out to be forgeries; only a minor part of them were found to be genuine unsent drafts which took great effort to find. The book seems to choose its author based on the scientific and personal interests of the reader, and its contents depend on reader's beliefs regarding that author's ideas. SCP-1138 always creates information that contradicts the reader's current beliefs (see addendum). In other words, the reader, thinking that a philosopher he knows adhered to a specific opinion, will find letters that explain ideas that directly contradict his beliefs, written out passionately and in great detail. If the reader has no concerns for any philosophical concepts at all, he'll find SCP-1138 to contain letters from people he or she respects (up to his or her parents), criticizing his life position.

Handling and reading the books has various effects. Readers who completely share "their" philosopher's views, fall into a prolonged depression that they compare to being betrayed by a close friend. People that can change their beliefs easily, rejoice at first, sometimes lapsing into euphoria and stating that they "finally found the truth", then become absent-minded and are unable to concentrate on their work. This condition lasts for about a week. Professional researchers who have definite proof of the falsity of SCP-1138's information, experience a strong desire to start a discussion. Should they start it, [DATA EXPUNGED] followed in 24 hours by a stroke which is always lethal. The reason for that may be [DATA EXPUNGED].

Currently there is no way of finding SCP-1138's "neutral" form. In the presence of humans and/or animals the book keeps its previous appearance. Handling SCP-1138 with a remote-controlled robot manipulator led to the book transforming to a tome of Isaac Asimov's letters in which he gave proof that Three Laws of Robotics should not be used in robot creation. First, adherence to that laws will lead to those laws being broken, hence they are useless. Second, robots are more perfect than humans and should not be restrained in their actions regarding humans. The attempt was stopped; the robot and the remote controller used in the experiment were examined. Results of examination showed [DATA EXPUNGED].

If there is no scientific article written about SCP-1138 in a month, the object disappears and reappears in the closest library or a book store that can theoretically contain publications of letters. Therefore, if the book breaks containment, researchers assigned to SCP-1138 should monitor the news and investigate each and every "sensational breakthrough" in philosophy and history.

History: SCP-1138 attracted the Foundation's attention in 19██ when █████ ███████, the leader of the Communist Party of Hungary came out with a harsh criticism of V.I. Lenin, claiming that he had found a collection of letters in which Lenin defined Marxism as a fallacious and harmful theory and proposed cooperation with the Capitalist West. Everybody who spoke against his criticism died in 24 hours, making the situation especially suspicious. █████ ████████'s house was searched; the only anomalous item found was a book that changed its appearance and contents when passed from one person to another.

Later it was found that the object disappears if there isn't an article that references it written in a month. Employees responsible for SCP-1138 got lucky, as the book always reappeared in Sector ██ library and was easily found. There are no known cases of the book's appearance before it attracted the Foundation's attention.

Addendum: Some of the most interesting instances of SCP-1138 are listed here:

• Marcus Tullius Cicero's letters in which he claims that every conflict should be resolved through brute force; the search for compromise based on laws and morality was deemed unnecessary. "Cedant arma togae" was claimed to be "a stupid joke"
• Niccolò Machiavelli's letters that explain negative economical, political and cultural consequences, should the medieval Italy become a united state. He also claims that a ruler should act within the law and ethics and never break these rules.
• Blaise Pascal's letters, describing Christianity as a faith most vile, false and abhorrent to human dignity.
• Friedrich Niezshe's letters, claiming that Christianity and Buddhism are the reason for all humanity's achievements. He also harshly denounces some people's aspiration to "be themselves" and not belong to the social mass.
• Fyodor Dostoyevsky's letters in which he claims that a decent and happy life can only be achieved through denial of the existence of souls and lack of compassion and beneficence.

Dr. █████'s preliminary conclusion: Currently we cannot determine if the object is sapient or not. Maybe it is sapient and creates information that contradicts our beliefs in order to provoke us to argue and become its victims. If that's the case, killing is a way of sustaining its life and the object's behavior is the way it hunts. Maybe the object is not sapient and simply retranslates thoughts from another reality in which philosophers and thinkers came to different ideas. Further study is necessary.
