It's December 21st, the winter solstice. The sun will go down soon, but I need to make sure you're prepared for what's about to happen. After it gets dark out, wherever you are, you may feel an odd sensation like you've suddenly lost something small but unbelievably precious. That's good. That means it's working. The feeling will fade and you can get on with your life.
If you don't feel anything, don't panic. You might get lucky. Maybe it happened without you noticing. Your life is so bland and dull and empty that a piece here and there won't be missed. But there's still a chance that it just didn't work. Maybe you haven't drank enough of the water. Maybe you don't watch a lot of TV. Maybe you're immune to the gas they pump into the air. Maybe you bypassed every failsafe that was put into place. Then they have to get involved directly.
Every man, woman, and child needs to pitch in, to contribute a little bit of themselves on the Dark Night. That's the way it's been for millennia. They used to collect their dues in other ways. Sacrifices, mainly. Prayer helped for a time. Nowadays, there's enough people in the world that they only need a minute or so from each. The average citizen will sleep sound, confident the sun will rise tomorrow. It's something they take for granted. So remember, even as they break into your house and take you away, don't struggle, don't cry, and above all don't try to escape. You're paying your dues. I promise that the alternative is much, much worse.
