Special Containment Procedures: SCP-1634 is to be held in a one meter³ metal safe with a combination lock. SCP-1634 shall not be removed from the safe except for testing or with the explicit written permission of the senior researcher assigned to SCP-1634. A staff member must always be within five (5) meters of SCP-1634.

When being transported over large distances, SCP-1634 must always be accompanied by two (2) vehicles with trained mechanics on board. Every four minutes, SCP-1634 must be transferred from one (1) vehicle to the other. For safety reasons, SCP-1634 must never be transported by air.

Description: SCP-1634 is a solid brass compass, circa 1890s, that does not appear to point towards the magnetic north but instead points to another direction. The needle on the compass irregularly swings to another direction without notice. The shortest recorded a time the needle has pointed in the same direction is fifty-four (54) minutes; the longest time is recorded at twelve (12) weeks. If SCP-1634 is over five (5) meters away from a sapient being, it will teleport back into the possession of its last living possessor or, if none remain alive, the nearest sapient being to it, regardless of whether or not they are human.

SCP-1634 possesses a weak but consistent compulsion, which can be easily dismissed, on its user to travel towards the direction its needle is pointing towards. When the possessor of SCP-1634 travels in a direction that goes against the needle, an initial warning event will occur immediately. The warning event varies according to the method of transportation but is usually an inconvenience that hinders movement. When the warning event fails to deter the possessor from proceeding, a disabling event, where the method of transportation is physically disabled, will occur to prevent further straying. The disabling event can, and occasionally does, result in death. When the possessor of SCP-1634 follows the path, SCP-1634 disregards terrain and natural barriers. Attempts to go around physical barriers are met with the same reaction as though the possessor of SCP-1634 had decided to head in a different direction, triggering the warning event and later the disabling event.

History: SCP-1634 was recovered in an antique shop. Agent ████ retrieved the object following rumors of a “cursed compass” originally owned by Charles ██████, the captain of the USS ████████ which had sunk in ████, but had gone through a series of owners. The last owner, a Mr. █████, died in a car accident soon after purchasing the compass.

Procedure: Subject instructed to pick up and carry SCP-1634 North until told to stop
Result: Upon picking up SCP-1634, D-891-02 glances towards 30 degrees West of South before beginning to head North. D-891-02 immediately trips and falls. D-891-02 is instructed to continue by the testing team. Subject continues for five minutes and slips on a wet spot and falls. D-891-02 is reported to have shattered both kneecaps.

Procedure: Subject instructed to pick up and carry SCP-1634 North until told to stop
Result: D-891-12 glances towards 30 degrees West of South upon touching SCP-1634. When questioned about it, he shrugs and proceeds North. The brakes deploy immediately and the power wheelchair tilts forward at an 80 degree angle to the ground. D-891-12 is told to continue experiment. D-891-12 continues for five minutes. At five minutes, the power wheelchair explodes. 61% of D-891-12 covered in second degree burns and shrapnel punctures. D-891-12 declared dead. SCP-1634 is recovered undamaged.

Procedure: Subject instructed to pick up and carry SCP-1634 30 degrees West of South until told to stop
Result: Upon picking up SCP-1634, D-891-21 moves towards 30 degrees West of South unhindered.D-891-21 walks to the wall and is then instructed to turn around and head back. D-891-21 expresses reluctance to agree but does so. D-891-10 trips and discovers that his shoe laces were tied together. D-891-21 fixes his shoes and begins to walk back. At five minutes from the time D-891-21 turned around, D-891-21 falls again and loudly vocalizes his distress at the sudden pain in the back of both legs. A diagnosis shows D-891-21 had managed to badly tear both of his Achilles tendons.

Procedure: Subject instructed to pick up and carry SCP-1634 to a slot on the other side designed to carry SCP-1634 back to its original location
Result: D-892-01 carries SCP-1634 South without incident until encountering the central pillar in the middle of the room. D-892-01 hesitates at the pillar, remaining in position for a full minute. When questioned by the researchers, D-892-01 became defensive and began to go around the pillar. D-892-01 immediately falls over but recovers and rounds the pillar. D-892-01 completes the rest of the experiment without incident.

Procedure: Subject instructed to pick up and carry SCP-1634 North until told to stop
Result: D-892-06 glances 14 degrees North of West when SCP-1634 is first picked up. When instructed to walk North, D-892-06 immediately steps into an abandoned animal burrow and falls. D-892-06 complains of ankle pains but remains able to walk. At four minutes and forty-three seconds, D-892-06 claims to hear a rattling sound and ceases movement. At exactly five minutes, D-892-06 is bit on the ankle by a pit viper identified as Crotalus cerastes. Experiment ended.

Procedure: Subject instructed to pick up and carry SCP-1634 North until told to stop
Result: D-892-17 glances 39 degrees North of West when SCP-1634 is picked up. When instructed to walk North, D-892-17 trips and lands on a previously unseen patch of Opuntia littoralis, or prickly pear cactii. D-892-17 quickly gets up and spends four minutes methodically removing spines stuck in his torso. D-892-17 proceeds North afterwards. One minute later, D-892-17’s shock collar inexplicably goes off and continues to do so until removed by Dr. █████. D-892-17 has gone through cardiac arrest but is later resuscitated with signs of brain damage.

Subject: Dr. █████ with a remote control, one small remote control jeep
Direction of the Needle: 27 degrees South of East
Location: Steppes of West ███████
Procedure: Dr. █████ tied SCP-1634 onto the back of the remote control jeep and instructed to drive it until told to stop.
Result: Remote control jeep fails to start. Source of the problem found in faulty wiring in the controller. After fixing the problem, jeep is restarted. The remote control jeep drives five meters when SCP-1634 disappears. Site ██ alerted of possible containment breach.

Addendum: It was later discovered that SCP-1634 had reappeared in the pocket of D-892-17 at Site ██. D-892-17 had been assigned to clean SCP-173 at the time of the event. D-892-17 is reported to have tripped while in the enclosure but managed to pick himself up quickly. Approximately five minutes later, the electricity in Building ████ shut off. The backup generator quickly came online and restored power. D-892-17 discovered with his neck snapped. SCP-1634 was later found on his person. SCP-1634 recovered.

Direction of the Needle: 4 degrees East of South
Location: The █████ Plain
Procedure: Junior Assistant ███████ will drive a 1998 Jeep Wrangler containing SCP-1634 East until otherwise instructed. Two other vehicles must flank Junior Assistant ███████ and stay within five meters at all times.
Result: Junior Assistant ███████ looked 4 degrees East of South before starting the Jeep. The jeep failed to start up. It was discovered that the fuel tank was empty and had to be refilled before the jeep started. At the five minute mark, the jeep hit a rut in the road and flipped over onto its back. Junior Assistant ██████ suffered small lacerations and a minor concussion but was otherwise unharmed.
