SCP-XXXX
Item #: XXXX
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: Two (2) samples of SCP-XXXX are to be kept in separate secure cold storage chambers in the Biohazard Containment Wing of Site 26.
Specimens of SCP-XXXX-1 are to be incapacitated at the first available opportunity; through nonlethal means if possible. The effects of SCP-XXXX can be countered with an injection of Serum-SCP-XXXX, or otherwise introduction of human amylase enzyme to the bloodstream within three (3) hours of initial infection. AND WHERE CAN WE GET THIS STUFF, HUH? SCP-XXXX-1 are to be held in quarantine for a minimum of six (6) hours, and any personnel who have come into contact with SCP-XXXX-1 must undergo medical screening.
Specimens of SCP-XXXX-1 who are incapacitated more than three hours after initial infection are to be terminated and disposed of as according to Biohazard Decontamination Protocol ZS. SCP-XXXX-1 'Safe Spaces', and other areas known to have been accessed by SCP-XXXX-1, are to be decontaminated as according to Biohazard Decontamination Protocol ZS.
In combat, SCP-XXXX-1 will generally go for the head. Use of protective headgear is advised, except where this would interfere with administration of the vaccine.
Description: SCP-XXXX is a neurotropic virus of the family Herpesviridae. SCP-XXXX corresponds to no officially recognised genus of Herpesviridae, but has been provisionally classified as Superstovirus, Human herpes virus 11 (HHV-11), by Foundation scientists. SCP-XXXX differs from other species of herpes virus due to its extranormally rapid rate of spread and replication, its profound effects on the central nervous system, and its extreme and unexplained reaction to the human amylase enzyme.
When a human is injected with SCP-XXXX-contaminated blood, the virus will replicate at the site of inoculation, before beginning to spread throughout the body, targeting the mucoepithelial cells and nerve cells. This process occurs at a speed unmatched by other viruses. After a period of 20-45 minutes the host will begin to develop a disease known as human paranoid anti-amylase disease. This disease has been found to only affect humans, and is typically fatal over the course of 3-5 days. Sufferers of human paranoid anti-amylase disease are classified as specimens of SCP-XXXX-1.
Excluding the extremely brief initial incubation period, there are three stages to human paranoid anti-amylase disease.
Stage 1: Lasts approximately one (1) hour. Salivatory glands in the mouth cease production of saliva. Production of amylase enzymes ceases in both the mouth and pancreas. Sufferers rapidly begin to develop blisters on the roof of the mouth. Encephalitis sets in. Initial psychological symptoms include mild headaches, heightened aggression, and greatly heightened paranoia. Sufferers become delusional, believing that all other humans are conspiring together, and are part of a united attacking force. Sufferers will often react violently to other humans, unless approached with offers of help. In this situation, sufferers will attempt to form a group, ostensibly to defend themselves against the attacking force. The key focus of the sufferer will be on 'survival', a notion that appears to be based not around factors such as food, water, or shelter, but rather on escaping from or defending against the opposing human force.
Stage 2: Can last anywhere from two hours to several days. Blisters in the mouth burst. Sufferers begin to bleed openly from the mouth. Sufferers typically react positively to this; in their delusional state, the blood is apparently interpreted as a sign of life or purity. Encephalitis worsens, causing increased delusions and paranoia. If the disease is not checked, intracranial pressure may increase to the point where bruising of the brain and lasting psychological damage becomes unavoidable. At this stage, sufferers typically become suspicious of people they previously trusted, believing that they are keeping secrets from the sufferer. Sufferers will attack or break away from other group members, and attempt to create a 'Safe Space', a sort of den or base from which to defend against the attacking force. 'Safe Spaces' can range in size from a full building to an enclosed area such as a vent, and are constructed with an emphasis on 'survival'. Sufferers will attempt to barricade entrances, hoard or construct an arsenal of weaponry, and attack any humans that approach.
Stage 3: The final stage of human paranoid anti-amylase disease. Encephalitis reaches a critical stage. Effects are compounded by factors indirectly caused by the delusions of the sufferer, such as sleep deprivation and sustained injuries, and starvation due to their unwillingness to exit their 'Safe Space'. The physical effects of human paranoid anti-amylase disease are also a significant factor. Delusions will develop into hallucination, with an emphasis on monstrous human imagery, sickness, and necrosis. Sufferers will become increasingly psychotic, and will develop a fixation on their own inevitable death. They will attempt to leave behind messages to other potential 'survivors'. These messages are typically cryptic or gibberish warnings and advice, and are written haphazardly using whatever medium is available. Sufferers will sometimes pre-empt this inevitable expiration by attempting to end their lives in a final violent confrontation of mutually assured destruction, though by this stage hallucinations are so intense that sufferers are unlikely to intentionally wound any actual humans.
PLAY UP THE BLOOD ANGLE
Human paranoid anti-amylase disease can be cured at any point during Stages 1 and 2. If amylase enzymes are introduced to the bloodstream, the effects of SCP-XXXX on cells will immediately begin to reverse. This process is not currently understood, but will spread NOTE THAT THE SYMPTOMS AND INDIRECT EFFECTS OF HHV-11 WILL NOT BE REVERSED. throughout the body and eradicate all traces of SCP-XXXX in the sufferer within four (4) hours.
However,
Note: Due to the aggressive and paranoid behavior of specimens of SCP-XXXX-1, it can be difficult to deliver an injection through normal means. In these circumstances, Foundation personnel are advised to use discretion and reasonable force. Repair of injuries or cosmetic damage sustained in these efforts will be treated as top priority by Foundation orthodontists.
