SCP-1777, after 34 prevented events |
---|
Item #: SCP-1777
Object Class: Safe (classification must be reconsidered after each instance of Event 1777-R)
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-1777 is to be kept in a locked safe at Site ██ at least 50 miles from any site where any Euclid-class or higher SCP is stored when not undergoing scheduled research. Under no circumstances is SCP-1777 to be removed from containment for personal use by any personnel. Termination of affected persons is not permitted due to the possibility of triggering Event 1777-R (detailed below).
Description: SCP-1777 is a single die with standard markings, apparently crafted of mammalian bone, although DNA analysis has proven fruitless. It weighs 4.8 5.2 grams, quite a bit heavier than its size and composition would indicate. In its initialized state, the die appears perfectly cube-shaped, with the marks on its faces completely flush with the surface. With use, the die will accumulate wear and damage at an advanced rate, and the marks on its faces will become indented.
SCP-1777 causes what appears to be a localized distortion in probability around its bearer, preventing postponing harm or misfortune. Whenever a subject rolls SCP-1777 with intent to use the result, the object will activate. The subject will experience begin to exhibit increasingly reckless behavior, along with a compulsion to keep the object on his person at all times. The probability of harm of any kind befalling the subject has been observed to drastically decrease, or even to disappear entirely for minor events. This protective effect persists until the bearer loses possession of SCP-1777 for longer than one minute, at which point the effect expires. At this stage, subjects report experiencing a powerful visual hallucination depicting the first event prevented by the die's effect. As soon as reasonably possible, SCP-1777 will alter probability to ensure that an equivalent event occurs. This process will continue until every event prevented during SCP-1777's activation has been accurately replicated.
If SCP-1777 is unable to replicate an event, it will begin to exhibit increasingly hazardous anamalous properties. After one day without replicating an event, various injuries and illnesses of increasing severity will begin to affect the subject's friends and family, with no discernible cause. How SCP-1777 identifies persons to affect is uncertain, but subjects universally experience severe guilt and grief regarding these incidents, even if they have no contact with the affected individuals. After three days without replicating an event, Event 1777-R will occur. For this reason, no user of SCP-1777 is to be terminated for any reason without first allowing the object to return to its initialized state. Failure to observe this procedure will result in various containment breaches, including SCP-███, SCP-███, and SCP-███.
Event 1777-R consists of the simultaneous mass replication of traumatic events. All persons within the area of effect (a 27m radius sphere) will experience vivid visual hallucinations of events previously prevented by SCP-1777. The hallucinated events will then occur to those persons, to whatever degree possible. Injuries from events unable to realistically occur will simply manifest on subjects' bodies without cause. Persons will immediately begin to exhibit late-stage symptoms various illnesses, and may remain contagious after the event. If a person is removed from the area of effect before the event completes, the effect will cease for that person, but any injuries sustained will remain. Following an instance of Event 1777-R, subjects' bodies have been observed to display a universally consistent set of markings and injuries, with medical examination yielding identical explanations for their causes. The comprehensive list of identifiable markings and injuries is collected in Addendum 1777-A.
Individuals who experienced Event 1777-R will then continue to experience anomalous "good luck", however, this effect will only serve to prevent the subject from dying. At the time of this writing, none of the ██ subjects affected by recorded instances of Event 1777-R have died. However, due to the effects of Event 1777-R, this effect is not considered "useful" at this time. Permission to briefly expose subjects to Event 1777-R before removing them from the affected area has been denied due to the dangers posed and evidence of potential ██████████████ among the observed injuries.
Additionally, after an instance of Event 1777-R, the die's weight is observed to increase slightly.
[[collapsible show="+ Addendum 1777-A (Observed Markings and Injuries)" hide="- Addendum 1777-A (Observed Markings and Injuries)"]]
- Various minor scrapes and bruises (various causes)
- Multiple broken limbs (injuries consistent with falling accidents)
- Severe burns (both chemical and thermal in origin)
- Missing left eye (appears to have been crushed inward with a blunt object)
- Missing lower jaw (appears to have been torn off in some sort of attack)
- Various partially complete tattoos (all completed to the point of some major mistake)
- Fluid in lungs and esophagus (consistent with drowning victims, fluid is mostly water)
- Missing right foot (appears to have been snapped off)
- Several bullet wounds in the torso and head (ballistics corresponding to various weaponry)
- [DATA EXPUNGED] (consistent with ████████ SCP-███ infection, never observed outside of Site ██)
- Partial Castration (male subjects only, female subjects exhibit corresponding lacerations. Injuries consistent with users of SCP-███)
- Broken or damaged fingernails on eight of ten fingers (mostly accidental injuries, but the index fingernail on the left hand is entirely missing)
- A note written on the palm of the left hand in Sharpie reading "Exam Tuesday"
(Note: when performing the first two tests, the properties of SCP-1777 were not yet clear. However, after test 1777-03, we reviewed the data for the previous two tests, and included additional data about the subjects' behavior after returning SCP-1777 to containment.)
Test Log 1777-01 (██/03/20██):
Subject: Four (4) D-Class personnel given instructions to play the board game Risk twice, with one subject using the die for the first game.
Result: The subject won each battle he was involved in, always rolling statistically higher than average (even when not using the affected die). His opponents rolled statistically lower than average. Subject noted feeling "lucky" several times throughout the game. The game took 48 minutes to play. Performance on the second game was not better than average.
Aftereffects: Upon returning SCP-1777 to containment, subject displayed substantial disorientation, and reported brief but vivid hallucinations of rolling very poorly. Subject rolled significantly worse than average through half of the second game, noting after several bad rolls that he was "paying for" his earlier luck. About halfway through the game, subject's rolls normalized. The game took 87 minutes to play.
Notes: The anomalous properties of SCP-1777 are not isolated to the die itself and can include other luck-based tasks. After returning the die to the containment unit, no further anomalous effects were observed.
Test Log 1777-02 (██/04/20██):
Subject: Four (4) D-Class personnel given instructions to play the board game Risk twice, with one subject holding the die during the first game but not using it.
Result: All subjects' rolls were statistically average. Subject lost both games.
Aftereffects: None. SCP-1777 was not activated.
Notes: The anomalous properties of SCP-1777 are not activated unless it is rolled.
Test Log 1777-03 (██/13/20██):
Subject: One (1) D-Class personnel given instructions to roll the dice, then touch a metal surface corresponding to the number rolled. All but one of the surfaces was electrified to provide a painful but not permanently harmful shock.
Result: Trial was repeated six (6) times. Subject rolled a 5 on the dice every time, touching the unelectrified surface.
Aftereffects: Subject is convinced to put SCP-1777 back into containment after minor resistance. Immediately after returning the item, subject reported brief but vivid hallucinations of touching an electrified surface. Subject expressed reluctance to touch any metal surface on his way out of the room. When touching the handle of the door out of the testing room, subject shouted in pain and stepped away from the door clutching his right hand. Subject experienced minor burns on his right hand consistent with electrical shock.
Notes: Anomalous effects end when the object is relinquished. Outcomes avoided while using the object appear to be postponed rather than averted.
Test Log 1777-03-a (██/14/20██):
Subject: Dr. ███████. checked the device out for scheduled research, but in fact appropriated it for personal use. This use of SCP-1777 was unapproved.
Result: Dr. ██████, though reportedly unskilled at the game, consistently won every hand in several games of Poker being played on site.
Aftereffects: Shortly after returning the device to containment, subject lost his wallet somewhere in the facility. The wallet was never recovered. Two days later he was crushed beneath a steel holding tank, which had previously been bolted to a concrete wall. The impact caused multiple injuries, including multiple lacerations on the skull and fractures of the upper right arm and neck.
Notes: Usage of SCP-1777 during this "test" was obviously unauthorized, and as such detailed notes were not taken. Dr. ███████. was working with various violent and dangerous SCP items at the time of his death. Examination showed his injuries to be consistent with a struggle ending in sudden and violent strangulation, but security footage documents the accident which caused the injuries. Subject appears to be emotionally distressed in the footage, and seems to anticipate the impact. As a result of these events, containment procedures for SCP-1777 have been changed. SCP-1777 is no longer to be stored in the same facility as dangerous or violent SCP items.
Test Log 1777-04 (██/23/20██):
Subject: One (1) D-Class personnel given instructions to roll the dice, then touch a metal surface corresponding to the number rolled. All but one of the surfaces was electrified to provide a painful but not permanently harmful shock.
Result: Trial was repeated thirty (30) times. Subject rolled a 2 on the dice every time, touching the unelectrified surface. After the trial, subject refused to relinquish control of the die, and was restrained by medical personnel while the die was confiscated and placed back into containment. Subject was isolated due to his violent outburst. After one day in confinement, the subject grew increasingly uneasy. He stated to researchers that he was experiencing persistent visions of his family members suffering and insisting that he had to "make things right". Subject attempted to break confinement, at which point he was physically restrained and confined for further study. After two more days in confinement, subject's body began twisting and contorting unnaturally against its restraints. The subject's limbs suddenly snapped in multiple places, burns appeared over most of the subject's body, and [DATA EXPUNGED] the spinal cord and brain stem, in a manner consistent with the first recorded incident. In addition to the previously noted injuries, subject's neck was snapped in the same manner in Test Log 1777-03a. Security footage recovered shows all medical personnel observing the subject to simultaneously experience identical injuries. 12 minutes into the event, the room in which the subject was contained collapsed, causing containment failure in several adjacent areas. As a result, ██ personnel (including █ researchers and █ medical personnel) were killed and ██ were directly affected by the event.
Aftereffects: None
Notes: During this time, it was confirmed that civilians associated with the subject had experienced sudden and unexplained pain consistent with electric shock. Additionally, another D-Class personnel with which the subject had been acquainted in prison also experienced mysterious pains and had reported them to staff. This individual later committed suicide, though this is not attributed to any anomalous effects of SCP-1777.
