Item #: SCP-XXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXX is to be stored in a containment locker with access provided only to senior researchers. Two armed guards should be posted outside the containment locker at all times. Only class D individuals are to be exposed to SCP-XXX; researchers, agents, and administrators who are accidentally exposed may be terminated upon request. Subjects exposed to SCP-XXX are to be observed for no more than 1 month and must be terminated upon the appearance of late stage symptoms.

Description: SCP-XXX is a single 16 oz. bottle of what appears to be hand sanitizer. The contents of the bottle have the appearance, smell, and consistency of regular off the shelf hand soap. SCP-XXX was obtained on 2/11/19XX from the lab of research immunologist Dr. XXXXX. Dr. XXXX had been reported missing for several weeks, which lead to a police search resulting in event SCP-XXX-ALPHA. The Foundation gained awareness of a possible SCP following the event and took over the case from local officials. Foundation agents were tasked with the clearing of all lab spaces, during which the bottle containing SCP-XXX was found. An agent believing the bottle to be ordinary hand soap used its contents to wash his hands while on site. Nothing abnormal occurred until a routine checkup revealed agent XXXX did not possess any leukocytes within his blood. Despite the absence of immune cells agent XXXX hadn’t been sick or noticed any abnormalities besides an increase in appetite. Agent XXX denied exposure to anything in the lab except for the hand soap. SCP-XXX was retrieved from storage and its properties uncovered by subject testing. Transcript of agent XXXX interview following the development of stage two symptoms can be found in SCP-XXX-BETA.

During first stage exposure SCP-XXX acts as a hand sanitizer, expelling dirt and bacteria from the subject’s hands as would be expected from a hand cleaning product. Residue from SCP-XXX is immediately absorbed into the dermal layer of the subject and eventually works its way to the bloodstream and lymphatic system. Upon encountering antigen presenting white cells SCP-XXX will adapt itself to the subject’s major histocompatibility complex, and will then immediately begin to trigger apoptosis of all white cells, the neutralization of the complement cascade, and the degradation of any antibodies. Following the elimination of immunologic functions, SCP-XXX will begin to act as an artificial immune system. Any individual whose immune system has been altered by effects of SCP-XXX will be referred to as SCP-XXX-1.

Stage two is denoted by the activation of SCP-XXX by an invading pathogen and an increased use of chemical energy. Once a pathogen, including viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites, and prions, enters into the tissues of an adapted individual SCP-XXX will immediately begin to alter itself into whatever enzyme or combination of enzymes are necessary to destroy the invading pathogen. This includes a variety of lipases, proteases, nucleases, and carbohydrases. Testing of subject samples has shown an 82% success rate of destroying invading pathogenic organisms, including HIV, Ebola, N. fowleri, and the causative prion of Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease. Failure to eliminate pathogens has been linked to malnutrition of the subject.

Stage three normally begins one month after initial contact. During stage three, SCP-XXX-1-A begins to be expelled from skin pores and into the external environment. Once exposed to the open environment SCP-XXX-A will begin to degrade any biological material that it makes contact with that is not recognized as belonging to SCP-XXX-1. Subjects that survive to stage three typically are not physically capable of movement due to a loss of muscle mass, neural tissue, and bone density. Unfortunately, SCP-XXX-A is extremely volatile and easily capable of becoming aerosolized.

In order to remain effective SCP-XXX requires large amounts of chemical energy. To maintain itself SCP-XXX alters the normal metabolism of SCP-XXX-1. On average SCP-XXX requires 15,000 calories a day in order to properly function. Once activated SCP-XXX will first derive most of its energy from the breakdown of stored fats, but once those reserves are depleted it will initiate the breakdown of muscle, bone, neural tissue, and various types of epithelium. Subjects who are exposed to SCP-XXX must be placed on a high calorie diet and maintain an intravenous feeding line at all times. The best class D subjects for testing are those that are obese to morbidly obese. Though 45% of testing subjects have displayed self-mutilation and cannibalism in order to satisfy energy needs, these actions should not be confused with side effects of SCP-XXX, instead being actions of desperation.

In all lab tests to date SCP-XXX has shown a limited time of stability within a biological environment, typically degrading within 48 hours. In order to maintain immunologic functions SCP-XXX will alter the function of present bone marrow in SCP-XXX-1. Over the period of 24 hours bone marrow stops producing white cells and begins the secretion of a SCP-XXX-1 specific form of SCP-XXX, which should be referred to as SCP-XXX-1-A. It is currently believed that the chemical pathways necessary for the production of SCP-XXX-1-A is what is causing the major portion of energy usage in the body.

Testing results can be found in the testing log.

Addendum: 01
Following testing event SCP-XXX-E5, it is no longer permissible to allow for the aerosolized of SCP-XXX for use in research. Accidental inoculation of all research staff in testing chamber resulted in immediate termination of all involved parties and lockdown of Site XX.
