SYMBIOTIC ANGLERFISH

Item#: SCP-XXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXX-A and all specimens of SCP-XXX-B are to be kept in a 6 m x 4 m x 4 m salt water aquarium at site ██ (Aquatic Containment Facility). SCP-XXX-A is to be fed one (1) kilogram of live mackerels per day.

Description: SCP-XXX-A is a female member of a previously undocumented subspecies of angler (Lophius piscatorius) measuring about 160 cm in length, that was captured near the Gibraltar Peninsula in 189█. The physiology and behaviour of SCP-XXX-A - with the exception of its unusually long lifespan - are similar to that of other anglerfish: it rests camouflaged on the bottom of its aquarium and tries to lure its prey using the mobile appendages located on its head. However, while a common specimen of L. piscatorius extends its jaws to attack as an automatic reaction whenever anything makes contact with its appendages, SCP-XXX-A seems able to recognize potential prey and react accordingly, suggesting a heightened intelligence. The epidermis of SCP-XXX-A’s posterior contains a large number of microscopic cavities, usually employed by SCP-XXX-B for rest or food storage.

SCP-XXX-B is a species of amphibian creatures with an average height of 1.8 mm, possessing fish-like features but humanoid structure and proportions. The exact population of SCP-XXX-B present on SCP-XXX-A is estimated to be between ████ and █████; its reproductive habits are as yet unknown. The interaction between SCP-XXX-A and SCP-XXX-B seems one of mutual symbiosis: SCP-XXX’s members keep SCP-XXX-A’s skin and teeth clean and free of parasitic worms, and in exchange eat the remains of SCP-XXX-A’s prey.

SCP-XXX-B’s dependency on SCP-XXX-A appears to be very strong: specimens of SCP-XXX-B forcibly removed from the aquarium usually die of severe [DATA EXPUNGED] within ██ minutes.

Addendum XXX-1: SCP-XXX-B’s intelligence may be more developed than what was previously observed. Specimens of SCP-XXX-B have in fact made use of bones and cartilage from SCP-XXX-A’s prey to build a 12 cm replica of SCP-XXX-A in the corner of the aquarium where SCP-XXX-A usually rests. They also perform what appear to be complex group dances in front of the "statue".
