SCP-XXXX
Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is stored in a standard locked storage box at Site-15. Document RRF-XXXX must be submitted for approval by the senior researcher on site prior to removal for testing. SCP-XXXX should only be used as glasses, and never folded together and used as a monocle (see Addendum XXXX-1). Instances of SCP-XXXX-A are to be stored at Site-15 for testing purposes. Requests to destroy any instances of SCP-XXXX-A have been denied.
Description: SCP-XXXX is a pair of pince-nez-style glasses. The lenses measure 38mm in diameter and are 5mm thick. The hinged bridge can be collapsed so that the lenses overlap, or extended to a maximum of 20mm. The frame is enamel inlaid with gold. Age of the glasses has yet to be determined but the style is indicative of pince-nez manufactured in the 16th and 17th centuries. The lenses are heavily weathered and near opaque.
SCP-XXXX was discovered on ██/██/20██ when Foundation informants within the ███ ███████, CA police station became aware of a cold case involving a suspected anomalous item. Investigations led to the procurement of SCP-XXXX and SCP-XXXX-A-1. No other material in the cold case proved anomalous nor informative of the origins of SCP-XXXX.
SCP-XXXX's anomalous properties manifest when used to view specific video recordings. Only the wearer of SCP-XXXX can see the anomalous effect. The recording must be original, though the medium appears to be immaterial (to date, recordings stimulating SCP-XXXX's anomalous properties have yet to been discovered in every possible video recording medium). If the video was recorded on a transportable medium, such as VHS, DVD, or flash memory stick, playback on any compatible device will trigger SCP-XXXX's anomalous properties. If the storage is integrated into the recording device (such as a cell phone with internal memory), the memory chip can be transplanted into a different device and still trigger SCP-XXXX. All copies have been non-anomalous.
When a compatible recording is viewed while wearing SCP-XXXX, the lenses become transparent by an unknown process. The video portion of the recordings are identical to non-anomalous copies until the arrival of a humanoid figure, labeled SCP-XXXX-1. SCP-XXXX-1's appearance varies from instances of SCP-XXXX-A, but is generally taller than any other viewable human and wears all white clothing appropriate to the event. The visible skin is pale with green and purple veins visible beneath. Hairstyle and color vary but are similar to others within the recording. The eyes have never been viewed and are usually covered with dark glasses or hidden under a shadow cast from a hood or hat.
Audio of the video is unchanged from the non-anomalous counterpart. SCP-XXXX-1 gestures and acts as if it is speaking, but no sound has been recorded that has been linked to SCP-XXXX-1. Groups of people react in similar ways (laughing, looking in the same direction, similar facial expressions and body language, etc.) suggesting that SCP-XXXX-1 is communicating with them in some way. Analysis of instances of SCP-XXXX-A are ongoing for infrasonic or other hidden audio tracks.
Subjects in instances of SCP-XXXX-A react with trepidation toward SCP-XXXX-1 initially but quickly accept its presence at the event. In every instance, SCP-XXXX-1 quickly becomes the focus of the recording and the event. Within three minutes of SCP-XXXX-1 entering the field of view of the camera, events in the recording begin to diverge from version seen without SCP-XXXX. Typical progressions start with a guest injuring themselves, often by apparent accident. This leads to escalating acts of violence and attempts by SCP-XXXX-1 of triage. Subjects never lose consciousness but they do exhibit expected reactions to the procedures. The other subjects, however, react to the procedures with laughter and other signs of enjoyment. When SCP-XXXX-1 turns its attention away from a subject, they appear to forget their previous discomfort and join in with the crowd (as much as possible dependent on procedure).
Subjects of affected recordings interviewed afterward recall nothing odd about the event and make no mention of SCP-XXXX-1. Psychological testing has revealed that newly formed phobias, fears, nightmares, panic attacks, and other phenomenon have manifested after the events that can be tentatively linked to SCP-XXXX-1's actions. Physical exams have shown increased rates of arthritis, cancer, respiratory conditions, osteoporosis, diabetes, amblyopia, anemia, iron deficiency anemia, jaundice, and tooth decay and gum disease which can be may be associated with SCP-XXXX-1's procedures.
To date, 38 instances of SCP-XXXX-A have been located and secured. Foundation agreements with popular studios around the world specializing in video photography have provided ███████ original recordings. Non-anomalous videos are destroyed. Fewer than 1 in 20,000 recordings has proven anomalous.
Addendum XXXX-1: SCP-XXXX-A-31 was viewed with SCP-XXXX in the monocle configuration resulting in the death of the researcher using SCP-XXXX (Dr. ██) and fifteen (15) casualties when [DATA EXPUNGED] Four (4) of the wounded committed suicide before Class B amnesiacs could be administered. The eleven (11) survivors have made full recoveries, though spouses reported sleepwalking episodes. Observation of all 11 confirm sleepwalking a minimum of two (2) nights a week. Three (3) of the subjects have tried to access SCP-XXXX while sleepwalking, requiring administration of Class A amnesiacs. Subjects currently held for study. Additional testing of SCP-XXXX-A-31 allowed with 04 approval. Until further notice, SCP-XXXX is not to be used in monocle configuration.
