Item #: SCP-XXX

Object Class: Keter

Special Containment Procedures: The Foundation has implemented protocols to cancel or to reduce the risk of generation of three of the five constituent sound tones that comprise SCP-XXX:

  • Frequency B and Frequency D: Frequencies B' and D' are, respectively, the antiphases of Frequencies B and D. These antiphase frequencies cancel frequencies B and D, respectively, within the range of the broadcast.

The Foundation operates active noise cancellation broadcast devices in approximately 36,000 locations worldwide, commonly disguised as public address systems, klaxons, speakers and the like, which continually broadcast at Frequency B' or D'.

Additionally, the Foundation has arranged for Frequencies B' and D' to be continually broadcast by most of the world's electroacoustic transducers. This has been achieved through a combination of inserting design changes into the engineering specifications of most commonly-manufactured electroacoustic transducers manufactured since 1988, inserting Frequency B', D' or both into the transmission of broadcast media and the encoding of recorded media (including inserting design changes into the engineering specifications of recording appliances so that Frequency B', D' or both are automatically encoded), and by manipulating the supply frequencies of commercially transmitted and distributed electric power so as to cause sound equipment and other electric appliances to generate Frequency B' or D'.1
  • Frequency E: In the wild, most instances of the generation of Frequency E had consisted of the whalesong of Balaenoptera svalbardi, the Svalbard whale. Through Foundation efforts, Balaenoptera svalbardi became extinct in 1982, thereby decreasing the likelihood that the tone would inadvertently be generated in a location near the generation of other constituent tones.

All documentation that specifies the constituent sound tones of SCP-XXX is to be kept strictly confidential.

Description: SCP-XXX is a chord consisting of five sound tones, designated Frequencies A, B, C, D and E. The tones of SCP-XXX are:

Designation Frequency Remarks
Frequency A 415.305██ Hz Within range of human hearing, slightly higher than G#
Frequency B ████ kHz Ultrasonic
Frequency C ████ Hz Subsonic
Frequency D ████ kHz Ultrasonic
Frequency E ████ Hz Within range of human hearing but rarely used in the chromatic muscial scale

The generation of one or more, but less than all, of the constituent tones of SCP-XXX does not result in anomalous effects.

The simultaneous generation of all five tones of SCP-XXX for a duration exceeding a few seconds affects2 the resonance of certain subatomic particles within range, causing them to disintegrate into their constituent elementary particles. Computer modeling has shown that a generation of SCP-XXX on an astronomical body is likely to result in an uncontrollable chain reaction resulting in the disintegration of virtually all matter comprising the astronomical body. As a result, all testing of SCP-XXX is prohibited.

NOT PART OF THE SCP ANYMORE
The anomalous effects of SCP-XXX generally manifest in humans who are within range only if the chord is generated for longer than 4.7 seconds. The degree of intensity of the anomalous effects significantly increases as the duration of the chord increases. If the chord is of short duration, humans within range generally experience a euphoric sensation comparable to religious ecstasy lasting for a period ranging from 30 minutes to 3 hours.

Exposure to chords of longer durations has been observed to result in a range of effects, including neurological damage and physiological alteration. In mild cases, the neurological damage results in glossolalia and/or diminished impulse control; and in more severe cases manifests in vivid and persistent hallucinations of direct communication with supernatural entities (including, in some instances, a compulsion to obey instructions purportedly given by the hallucinated entities even when those instructions would be considered antisocial or psychotic, such as vigorous proselytism, the development of severe martyr complex, self-flagellation and violence).

Mild cases of physiological alteration has in some cases resulted in haemolacria and stigmata. In more severe cases, affected individuals have been known to experience dramatic rapid body alteration including the appearance of a supernumerary eye in the subject's forehead, the growth of additional limbs (often protruding from the dorsum, and covered with avian-like integumary structures), bioluminescence, levitation and dramatically elevated body temperature including combustion in some cases.
