SCP-1844

Item #: SCP-1844

Object Class: Keter

Special Containment Procedures: At least eight members of Task Force Omega-144 are to be stationed at Site-166 at all times, with no fewer than three members of the task force concurrently conducting their respective containment protocols aboard SCP-1844 at any given time. Members of Omega-144 are to be rotated on-station and off-station every 48 hours as appropriate to mitigate stress. On-station members of Omega-144 are to be equipped with night vision goggles and Class IV environmental protection suits with integrated closed-circuit breathing air.

The current roster of Task Force Omega-144 consists of the individuals identified on the table below. The table below also identifies the containment protocol to be performed on-station by the task force member in question:

In each case, the performance of the containment protocol is to be directed towards SCP-1844-A. No sources of light in the visible spectrum are permitted to be used within SCP-1844. Additional Foundation staff are to be maintained on-station at SCP-1844, or on standby at Site-166, in order to maintain the submarine's power systems and air scrubbers and to provide medical and other support services.

Description: SCP-1844 is Conquérant, a Triomphant-class ballistic missile submarine of the French navy. The submarine's position is at at 10°1██'S, 109°5██'E, at a depth of 7,600 meters near the bottom of the Sunda Trench in the eastern Indian Ocean. The submarine lies upside-down at the bottom of the trench. Although SCP-1844’s pressure hull is intact, the conning tower was badly damaged during Incident G and has subsequently been removed and replaced by an access hatch connecting the submarine to Site-166, an undersea facility constructed next to SCP-1844’s location.

SCP-1844-A is a tendril or root-like organic structure, approximately twelve centimeters in typical diameter, that emanates from a point of origin within SCP-1844’s starboard-side #3 missile launch tube. The structure passes through the launch tube hatch (which is partially ajar), then branches out in several directions, with each branch twisting and zig-zagging for several thousand kilometers in various directions with additional branches every few hundred kilometers. The outer surface of the structure is reddish-brown in color, with hairless, mottled skin. The structure constantly emits a foul-smelling, grey thixotropic slime. Humans who are exposed to the slime experience altered brain chemistry which manifest as feelings of hopelessness or despair. If SCP-1844-A is exposed to light in the visible spectrum (whether or not the containment protocol is being performed), pores in the structure emit a highly toxic sulfur-based gas. Due to the size of the structure, the impossibility of shielding it from visible light if it should extend out of deep-sea depths or on land, and the catastrophic environmental damage that could result from the gas emanations, maintenance of the containment protocol has been classified as a Level A priority.

SCP-1844-A subtly pulsates as if by means of internal circulation or respiration but does not otherwise move except for growth in length during breaches in the performance of the containment protocol. SCP-1844-A radiates heat as if it were a similarly-sized mammal with a high rate of metabolism. Its point of origin has not been directly inspected due to the slime filling the launch tube.

Despite SCP-1844-A's apparently organic composition, it has an unmeasurably high Vickers hardness and has proven immune to damage by cutting, burning, lasers, corrosive acids and similar substances, and other means. During breaches in the performance of the containment protocol, various tendrils of SCP-1844-A increase in length at rates of up to 420 meters/second, with the additional mass coming from an unknown source.

SCP-1844-A generates low-frequency vibrations which, from the interior crew spaces of SCP-1844, are perceived to be similar to a human voice. When the containment protocol is being properly performed, these sounds are inarticulate; during breaches in the containment protocol these sounds resemble blasphemies, religiously-themed threats and prophetic statements in various liturgical languages. Due to these sounds and the efficacy of the containment protocol, SCP-1844 has been classified as a Type-II theoeschatologic hazard.

Special Containment Procedures: At least eight members of Task Force Omega-144 are to be stationed at Site-166 at all times, with no fewer than three members of the task force concurrently conducting Procedure 1844-Alpha aboard SCP-1844 at any given time. Members of Omega-144 are to be rotated on-station and off-station every 48 hours as appropriate to mitigate stress. On-station members of Omega-144 are to be equipped with night vision goggles and Class IV environmental protection suits with integrated closed-circuit breathing air. Task force members are to be provided with sufficient quantities of pencils, writing paper and dextroamphetamines.

In order to conduct Procedure 1844-Alpha, the task force member must compute, manually and in real time, the differential pseudo-Riemannian topology of the asymptotes of the point of origin. Although the variables upon which the computations are based are derived from mechanical and electronic instrument readings, the computations themselves are to be conducted without the aid of mechanical or electronic computing devices. The speed and precision with which the calculations are performed have been shown to directly affect the efficacy of the procedure in retarding the growth of SCP-1844-A. Moreover, the procedure has been shown to be ineffective unless the individual performing the calculations simultaneously maintains negative epistemology with respect to the computational work—that is to say, the individual must disbelieve the results of the mathematical computations.1 The computations are to be performed aboard SCP-1844, within 4 meters of the point of origin.

No sources of light in the visible spectrum are permitted to be used within SCP-1844. Additional Foundation staff are to be maintained on-station at SCP-1844, or on standby at Site-166, in order to maintain the submarine's power systems and air scrubbers and to provide medical and other support services.

Description: SCP-1844 is GOC-SSN-06 (formerly the Conquérant), a Triomphant-class ballistic missile submarine that had been decommissioned by the French Force de Frappe and subsequently assigned to the GOC. Immediately following Incident G, the GOC voluntarily disclosed SCP-1844's position and logs to the Foundation,2 thereby enabling the Foundation to develop and implement the containment protocol.

The structure passes through the launch tube hatch (which is partially ajar), then branches out in several directions along the seafloor, with each branch twisting and zigzagging for several hundred kilometers in various directions with additional branches every few hundred kilometers. The outer surface of the structure is reddish-brown in color, with hairless, mottled skin. The structure constantly emits a foul-smelling, grey thixotropic slime. Humans who are exposed to the slime experience altered brain chemistry which manifests as feelings of disorientation and vertigo. If SCP-1844-A is exposed to light in the visible spectrum (whether or not the containment protocol is being performed), pores in the structure emit a highly toxic sulfur-based gas.

SCP-1844-A subtly pulsates as if by means of internal circulation or respiration, but does not otherwise move except for growth in length during breaches in the performance of the containment protocol. SCP-1844-A radiates heat as if it were a similarly-sized mammal with a high rate of metabolism. Its point of origin has not been directly inspected due to the slime filling the launch tube; however, the fact that Procedure 1844-Alpha is able to SCP-1844-A suggests that SCP-1844-A emanates from a hyperbolic non-Euclidean space.

Despite SCP-1844-A's apparently organic composition, it has an unmeasurably high Vickers hardness and has proven immune to damage by cutting, burning, lasers, corrosive acids and similar substances, and other means. During breaches in the performance of the containment protocol, various tendrils of SCP-1844-A increase in length at rates of up to 65 meters/second; the source of the additional mass is as yet unknown.

Due to the size of the structure, the impossibility of shielding it from visible light if it should extend out of deep-sea depths or on land, and the catastrophic environmental damage that could result from the gas emanations, maintenance of the containment protocol has been classified as a Level A priority.
